Seriously, this might not count as a “recipe”, but I’m addicted to it right now and have a great story to go with it, so here you go.
My mom’s mom lived on the East coast and I saw her typically once a year. We called her Mumsie and my husband often said she was the tallest 5’4″ person he ever met. She had a presence.
We got married in 1996 and she was unable to travel to our wedding. That summer my mom and I went to see her and spend a week. This story occurred then and I’ll never forget it.
Mumsie ordered the same thing every day that we went out to eat for lunch. (She didn’t love cooking). Her order? BLT and Iced Tea. She was a creature of habit, and I am as well. Didn’t matter where we went, she didn’t look at the menu, she just put in her order.
One day she placed her order and the waiter said, “I’m sorry, ma’am, we don’t have that on the menu.”
Mumsie said, “Do you have Bacon?”
“Yes.”
“Tomato?”
“Yes.”
“Lettuce?”
“Yes.”
“Mayo?”
“Yes.”
“Bread?”
“Yes.”
“Then I’ll take a BLT and an Iced Tea.”
To which he wisely said, “Sounds good.”
I miss her like crazy. She was a woman who knew who she was and stood up for herself. In her honor, I have a BLT quite often, though I often add avocado, which I’m thinking she’d think was ridiculous.
My BLAT in honor of Mumsie
- Two slides of sourdough – I use Izzio bread
- One tomato, sliced
- 1/2 an avocado, sliced
- Three slices of bacon
- A handful of Butter Lettuce
- Hellmann’s Mayonnaise
I start with slicing my tomato on a cutting board and lightly sprinkling the slices with salt. I do this about 15 minutes before I want to eat the sandwich.
For my bacon I use Oscar Mayer’s Center Cut bacon, cooked in the oven. I’m a big believer in crispy bacon, but you do you.
Two slices of Izzio Sourdough, nice and brown.
A smear of Hellman’s on each side.
Tomatoes on both slices.
Then avocado slices on one side, Butter Lettuce on the other, and sandwich together.
Perfection.
Make sure to have a cool glass of Iced Tea. Raise a glass to Mumsie and kick-ass grandmas everywhere.
